Tom Holland and Austin Butler Star in Amazon MGM’s New Series ‘American Speed’

American Speed

Amazon MGM Studios has greenlit “American Speed,” a high-octane film starring Tom Holland and Austin Butler as brothers embroiled in the adrenaline-fueled and turbulent world of racecar driving. Set against the true story of the Whittington brothers—legendary racers of the 1970s and 80s who became infamous for their involvement in one of motorsport’s biggest scandals—the film explores themes of ambition, rivalry, and the high stakes of balancing risk on and off the track.

A Vision Led by Charles Roven and Atlas Entertainment

Leading the project is renowned producer Charles Roven, an Academy Award winner celebrated for his extensive film work, including “Oppenheimer.” Under his production banner Atlas Entertainment, Roven brings a wealth of expertise to “American Speed,” creating anticipation for a gritty, character-driven narrative. Partnering with Roven are producers RD Whittington and Douglas Banker, with Atlas Entertainment’s Ryan Sanak as executive producer. The powerhouse production team aims to present an authentic look at the Whittingtons’ thrilling yet cautionary tale.

Screenwriter Dan Wiedenhaupt Adapts the Real-Life Saga

The screenplay for “American Speed” is penned by Dan Wiedenhaupt, known for his work on the historical survival drama “Alpha.” Tasked with capturing the Whittington brothers’ extraordinary story, Wiedenhaupt aims to weave an intense narrative that highlights both the brothers’ talents on the track and their secretive, controversial exploits off it. Drawing from historical accounts, Wiedenhaupt brings to light the audacious lengths the Whittington brothers went to for their passion for racing, revealing a side of motorsport rarely seen by audiences.

The Rise and Fall of the Whittington Brothers

The Whittington brothers—Don, Bill, and Dale—were highly talented and ambitious racers who made a name for themselves in American motorsport. Their most remarkable victory was at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979, where Don and Bill, along with German driver Klaus Ludwig, took first place in their Porsche 935 K3. At the time, the Whittingtons were hailed as underdog heroes; however, their success was clouded by rumors of financing their racing careers through dubious means.

In the early 1980s, both Don and Bill were implicated in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) scandal. Investigations revealed that their success on the track was partially bankrolled by funds from drug trafficking and other illicit activities. In 1986, Bill Whittington pled guilty to charges of tax evasion and conspiracy to smuggle marijuana into the United States from Colombia, receiving a 15-year prison sentence and forfeiting $7 million in assets. His brother Don was also entangled in these dealings, ultimately pleading guilty to money laundering in connection with the drug operations. Despite the brothers’ undeniable skills and contributions to the sport, their legacy was forever tarnished by these revelations.

The film aims to offer a raw, unfiltered look into the complex lives of the Whittington brothers, highlighting the blurred line between risk-taking in motorsport and in life. “American Speed” delves into the decisions that led them down a treacherous path, exploring the psychological and emotional drivers that fueled both their passion for racing and their involvement in criminal activity.

Tom Holland and Austin Butler’s New Roles and Careers So Far

For Tom Holland and Austin Butler, “American Speed” offers an opportunity to step into layered, morally complex roles. Known for his portrayal of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland brings a boy-next-door charm that contrasts with the darker facets of his character in “American Speed.” Following his recent work in the thriller miniseries “The Crowded Room,” Holland has shown his ability to handle intense, dramatic roles, making him well-suited to take on the challenges of a high-stakes racing narrative. Holland is also coming off a successful run in the West End, where he starred as Romeo in “Romeo & Juliet,” showcasing his versatility. His upcoming projects include reprising his role as Peter Parker in a fourth “Spider-Man” installment and leading a yet-untitled Christopher Nolan project.

Austin Butler, on the other hand, continues to expand his range following a standout performance as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” which garnered critical acclaim. Recently, Butler appeared in “The Bikeriders” alongside Tom Hardy and portrayed the iconic role of Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two.” With “American Speed,” Butler is expected to bring his edge to the role of one of the Whittington brothers. His future projects include starring in Ari Aster’s “Eddington” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Caught Stealing,” showcasing his commitment to complex, multidimensional roles.

Behind the Production: Representation and Key Industry Connections

The cast and crew of “American Speed” are represented by leading agencies and production teams. Tom Holland is managed by WME, Shelter PR, and legal representation from Sloane Offer. Austin Butler is represented by WME, Anonymous Content, Sloane Offer, and The Lede Company, reinforcing the film’s backing from prominent Hollywood talent agencies. Screenwriter Dan Wiedenhaupt’s representation includes WME, Lit Entertainment Group’s Adam Kolbrenner, and legal counsel from Jeff Frankel. Charles Roven, meanwhile, is represented by WME and Michael Schenkman, adding more industry expertise to the project.

A New Chapter for Amazon MGM Studios

Amazon MGM Studios has been expanding its reach with high-quality, character-driven films, and “American Speed” marks another addition to its diverse portfolio. The studio’s recent partnership with Charles Roven on the sci-fi thriller “Mercy,” starring Chris Pratt, is set for a worldwide theatrical release on August 15, 2025. With “American Speed,” Amazon MGM Studios signals its commitment to stories that combine action, drama, and complex real-life narratives, appealing to a broad audience.

“American Speed” is expected to resonate with fans of action-packed dramas that explore the personal costs of ambition and the consequences of living on the edge. With a blend of high-stakes racing and an in-depth look into one of the most intriguing scandals in motorsport history, the film offers a unique narrative that stands out in the landscape of sports dramas.
