T20 World Cup 2024 Records: Bumrah’s Economy Rate & Historic Low Run-Rate

India Win T20 World Cup 2024

The recently-concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will be memorable for many reasons: bowler-friendly conditions, nail-biting thrillers, unforgettable upsets, the rise of associate nation cricket, and Team India ending their 11-year-long ICC trophy drought.

The tournament established numerous records, including those in six-hitting, run-rate, and bowling economy rates. Here is a look at some numbers that truly made this tournament one of the best in a long time.

Lowest Run Rate in T20 World Cup History

7.09 – The overall run rate in the tournament was the lowest in any men’s T20 World Cup. It outdid the previous low of 7.43 runs per over in the 2021 edition, played in the UAE, according to ESPNCricinfo.

Record Sixes Smashed

517 – The number of sixes smashed during the competition marked the first time 500-plus sixes were hit in the competition, surpassing the previous best of 405 sixes in the 2021 edition. The ratio of balls per six was also the best ever, at 21.35.

India’s Unbeaten Run

1 – India became the first team ever to win the T20 World Cup without a loss, securing eight wins in a row. They won three in the group stage against Ireland, Pakistan, and the USA, three in the Super Eights against Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Australia, and one each against England and South Africa in the semifinal and final.

No Centuries Scored

2 – This was only the second ICC T20 World Cup without a single century scored, with the highest score being the West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran‘s 98 against Afghanistan. The last time this happened was in 2009, with Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan having the highest score of 96 against the West Indies in the semifinals.

Dominance of Bowlers

19 – There were 19 four-wicket hauls in the tournament, the highest ever in a men’s T20 World Cup, showcasing the level of dominance bowlers had. The previous best was 14 four-fers in 2021.

Best Economy Rate

4.17 – Pacer Jasprit Bumrah‘s economy rate of 4.17 was the best ever for anyone with 100-plus deliveries bowled in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. Bumrah’s most expensive spell was 1/29 in four overs against Australia.

Bumrah’s Exceptional Performance

3 – The difference between wickets taken and boundaries conceded by Bumrah during the tournament. Bumrah took 15 wickets and conceded only 12 boundaries, including two sixes.

Record Dismissals by a Wicketkeeper

14 – Rishabh Pant’s 14 dismissals as a wicketkeeper, including 13 catches and one stumping, is the highest ever by a wicketkeeper in a single edition of the men’s T20 World Cup.

Top Wicket-Takers

17 – Arshdeep Singh and Fazalhaq Farooqi both took 17 wickets in this World Cup, the most by a bowler in a single edition of the competition, surpassing Sri Lanka’s Wanindu Hasaranga’s mark of 16 in 2021.

First Player to Win as Player and Captain

1 – Rohit Sharma became the first player to win the competition both as a player (in 2007) and as a captain this year. Daren Sammy of the West Indies won the title twice as a captain, in 2012 and 2016, with several players contributing to both victories.

No Sixes in a Match

0 – The match between New Zealand and Uganda saw no sixes hit, making it only the third men’s T20 World Cup game with no sixes hit, alongside South Africa vs Zimbabwe in Hambantota in 2012 and Netherlands vs Pakistan in Perth in 2022.

Runs Without a Fifty

171 – Rishabh Pant scored 171 runs during the competition, the second-highest in a single edition without a fifty, falling short of Bangladesh’s Anamul Haque, who scored 184 runs in the 2014 edition with a best score of 44*. Pant’s best score was 42 against Pakistan.

Most Balls Without Conceding a Six

96 – Pakistan’s veteran pacer Mohammad Amir bowled 96 deliveries in this World Cup without conceding a six. Amir is the first bowler to not concede a six in two different editions of the men’s T20 World Cup (a minimum of ten overs). In 2010, he bowled 139 balls without conceding a six, which was the second-highest by a bowler in an edition, only surpassed by Umar Gul’s 147 balls in 2009.

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 stands out for its unique and record-breaking nature, showcasing incredible performances and unforgettable moments that cricket fans worldwide will cherish.
