Olivia Munn Shares Struggles Filming Sex Scenes During Cancer

Since 2021, actress Olivia Munn has undergone a life journey filled with dramatic highs and challenging lows. From starting a family with comedian John Mulaney and entering into marriage, to a shocking breast cancer diagnosis and five life-altering surgeries, the past four years have been anything but quiet for the 43-year-old actress. Yet, throughout it all, Munn has maintained her humor, grace, and commitment to advocacy—especially in the area of early breast cancer detection.

Diagnosed Despite a Clean Mammogram

In a striking revelation, Munn shared earlier in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer despite initially having a clear mammogram and negative results from genetic testing. Her doctor opted to calculate a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score—a decision that ultimately saved her life. This lesser-used tool indicated she had a high risk, prompting further tests that revealed she had Luminal B cancer in both breasts, a fast-growing and harder-to-detect subtype of breast cancer.

Within 30 days of the diagnosis, Munn underwent a double mastectomy, which was only the beginning of her treatment journey. In total, she would undergo five surgeries, including the removal of her ovaries and uterus, due to hormone-related cancer concerns.

Balancing Health, Motherhood, and Career

Despite her medical battles, Olivia Munn’s personal life continued to evolve. She and her husband John Mulaney became parents to two children: their son Malcolm, born in November 2021, and their daughter Méi, who was born via gestational surrogacy in September 2024.

Munn has spoken openly about the emotional impact of not being able to carry her second child due to her treatments, and about the intense struggles she faced postpartum after Malcolm’s birth—battling severe anxiety that included morning panic attacks, tightness in her chest, and overwhelming fear. She later stated in interviews that these postpartum challenges felt even more difficult than cancer itself.

Returning to Acting with New Vulnerability

Now, Olivia Munn is back on screen in the newly released Apple TV+ drama series Your Friends & Neighbors, which premiered on April 11, 2025. In the show, created by Jonathan Tropper (Banshee, Warrior), Munn plays Samantha “Sam” Levitt—a complicated character entangled in an affair with Andrew “Coop” Cooper, played by Jon Hamm. Her character is the longtime mistress of Coop, who is also the ex-husband of her good friend Mel, portrayed by Amanda Peet.

Describing the emotionally tense dynamic between the characters, Munn explained that her character longs for something deeper than what Coop can offer. “She wants something so much more from him than he’s willing to give,” Munn said in a candid interview with the Los Angeles Times. “Their only connection is through sex.”

That element posed a personal challenge for Munn. Having gone through multiple surgeries, she was left with visible scars—some apparent even in clothing, and others hidden, only visible when fully nude. Facing the prospect of sex scenes post-surgery was daunting.

Overcoming Fear and Embracing the Moment

Overcoming Fear and Embracing the Moment

“I was really nervous about doing any sex scenes because I have a lot of scars,” Munn admitted. “Scars that can be seen in clothing and scars that you wouldn’t know unless I was completely nude.”

Despite these insecurities, Munn credits the compassion and professionalism of Jon Hamm and the show’s intimacy coordinator, along with her own internal resolve, for giving her the confidence to proceed. She explained that while she did feel insecure, with each scene she completed, she gained a little more confidence. “Each time I did it, I felt better,” she shared.

Support from the Creator and Cast

Jonathan Tropper, the series creator and showrunner, said he was moved by Munn’s honesty about her health journey. “When someone tells you that, you just tell them that you hope they’re doing OK and their health is what’s most important,” Tropper told the Los Angeles Times.

He noted that the production was fully supportive of her needs, adjusting filming schedules to accommodate her rest periods and medical treatments. “We committed to doing what we had to do on the show to make sure she was resting when she needed to rest,” he said. “And that we could do what we could with her schedule to make sure she got the time she needed for her health.”

A Strong Critical Debut

Your Friends & Neighbors has debuted to solid critical acclaim. It currently holds an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising the show’s compelling character dynamics, smart writing, and sharp performances. Olivia Munn’s portrayal of Sam Levitt has been singled out as one of the series’ standout elements. Her ability to channel emotional vulnerability into her character has resonated strongly with viewers and critics alike.

According to Decider, Munn’s performance brings both humanity and strength to a character who might otherwise be misunderstood, navigating love, longing, and self-worth in the shadows of betrayal and secrecy.

Advocacy Beyond the Screen

Outside of acting, Munn has become a vocal advocate for breast cancer awareness, especially regarding early detection. Her own experience—where a simple extra step by her doctor led to life-saving discoveries—has pushed her to encourage others to ask for breast cancer risk assessments, even if their initial screenings are clear.

She continues to speak openly about the emotional and physical realities of living with cancer, including the need for fertility preservation, the experience of hormone therapy, and the long-term impact of surgeries.

“I just kept thinking—how do I make sure I’m here for my kids?” Munn said. “That became the priority. And I’m grateful every day for the support I have.”

Redefining Strength and Self-Love

Today, Olivia Munn is navigating what she calls her “new normal”—a life that balances acting, advocacy, motherhood, and personal healing. She’s learning to be more forgiving toward herself, to rest when needed, and to find joy in small, everyday moments.

While her body may carry scars, they now serve as symbols of resilience and survival. And as she continues to share her journey both onscreen and off, she is helping countless others find courage in their own stories.
