Seven Promising Steps to Ensure a Happy and Healthy Life for Your Dog

Dogs are one of the best companions any person can ask for. They are loyal, reliable, and undoubtedly adorable. Dog owners can agree that no words can describe the feeling or the overall experience of being a dog parent.

Every dog owner looks forward to having a great time with their furry buddies. Of course, it cannot be possible if your dog is not happy and healthy.

While dogs may not be able to communicate their pain or unease using words, there are things you can do to ensure their happiness and health.

Here are some of the best tips you can use as a responsible dog owner.

1. Monitor Food Consumption

The increasing number of overweight pets is becoming a serious issue in the field of veterinary medicine. According to recent data by Banfield Pet Hospital, more than 34% of the dogs are obese, which is quite alarming.

Obesity in dogs is one of the most common causes of health risks, such as metabolic abnormalities, poor immunity, and cardiovascular diseases. All of these diseases and health problems may cause your dog to depart early.

Of course, it is natural for a pet parent to want to spoil their dog with the snacks they love. However, you should always avoid it for the well-being of your loved pet.

2. Visit a Vet

If you think that you should visit vets only when your dog is extremely unwell, you may be mistaken. Every health issue does not show on the surface and since dogs cannot use words to communicate, it may be too late when you learn about it.

Instead of having regrets later, it is always advised that dog owners visit the vet at least once a year to ensure their best health. It is the best approach for the vet to examine your dog and notice any changes in their health.

If they face something concerning, they can dig deeper into the problem and try to find any possible solutions. In many cases, preventative care can save the lives of beloved pets.

3. Take Preventative Measures

All dog owners would love to treat their dog’s health problem before it progresses. Timely treatment and prevention can save their dog from unexplainable pain and you would not have to rush to the vet in the middle of the night either.

For example, heartworm diseases are a common reason for fatalities in dogs. However, it can be prevented with the help of preventatives, as recommended by the vet.

You can discuss monthly preventatives with a local vet. There will be no need for you to visit the vet for preventive care. You can easily follow this routine at home.

4. Ensure Regular Exercise

Without a doubt, every dog owner can agree that exercise makes their dogs happy. Going for a walk or pointing in that direction through your gestures alone can make your dog wag their tail with joy.

Every dog owner must make sure to go for a walk every day. Even if there are days when you struggle to find time, make sure to at least spend some fun time with your dog in the yard.

Engaging with your dog in physical activity does not only benefit them. You can also benefit by staying active by their side while going for a jog or a run.

5. Keep Up with Vaccinations

As a responsible dog owner, you must understand the importance of vaccinations for the well-being of your dog. Vaccinations are essential to keep your dog healthy and happy. Paired with boosters, vaccines can prevent diseases from spreading.

Make sure to ask your vet about important vaccinations. Some vaccinations are generally recommended for dogs everywhere, while others may be recommended only in specific geographical areas. It is best to rely on expert advice in this area.

6. Socialise Your Dog

Socialising your dog is an extremely important responsibility every dog owner must fulfil. Socialising not only helps your dog have a great time but also prevents them from becoming hostile towards other dogs or people.

You can use the power of positive reinforcement, such as their favourite toys or treats, to encourage the desired behaviour in your pet. It can take some time and effort for you to see the desired results, but the happiness of your dog is all worth it.

7. Ease the Identification Process

Although dogs are loyal and return at the day’s end, it is crucial for you to prepare for the worst-case scenario. Many unfortunate circumstances may lead your dog to be separated from you.

Instead of blaming fate for it, you can take crucial steps such as getting your dog microchipped or always making them wear information tags. This way, they will be easy to locate even if they are separated from you.
