Today, August 15, 2025, marks the 50th martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, The architect of Bangladesh’s independence.
It is a day deeply etched into the national consciousness—a day when the country lost not just its leader, but an entire generation of political heirs and family members to an act of calculated political violence.
The Tragic Night of August 15, 1975
In the early hours of August 15, 1975, a group of army officers and soldiers carried out a well-orchestrated coup that culminated in the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was then serving as the President of Bangladesh. Armed units stormed Bangabandhu Bhaban at Road No. 32 in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, in a premeditated assault. The killings were not limited to him—his entire immediate family, except two daughters abroad, were mercilessly gunned down.
Those who lost their lives included:
- Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib, Bangabandhu’s wife and lifelong political partner.
- His three sons: Sheikh Kamal (a prominent sports organizer), Sheikh Jamal (an army officer), and Sheikh Russel (only six years old at the time).
- Sultana Kamal, wife of Sheikh Kamal.
- Rosy Jamal (Parveen Jamal), wife of Sheikh Jamal.
- Sheikh Abu Naser, his younger brother.
- Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, his nephew and a leading youth organizer, along with his pregnant wife Begum Arzoo Moni.
- Abdur Rab Serniabat, his brother-in-law and a Cabinet minister, along with his son Arif, daughter Baby, and young relative Sukanto Babu.
- Close family members Shaheed Serniabat and Rintu.
Outside the residence, Colonel Jamil Uddin Ahmad, a security officer who rushed to the scene, and Sub-Inspector Siddiqur Rahman of the Special Branch of Police were also killed while trying to respond to the attack.
The only surviving members of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s immediate family—Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana—escaped the carnage because they were abroad, staying in West Germany at the time.
Burial of the Martyrs
Following the massacre, Bangabandhu’s body was taken to his birthplace in Tungipara, Gopalganj, for burial. His wife and sons were also buried in Tungipara. Many other slain family members were laid to rest at Banani Graveyard in Dhaka. The burials took place under strict military supervision, without the usual state honors, and in a politically charged environment that reflected the turmoil of the time.
The Political Legacy of Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on March 17, 1920, in Tungipara. His political career began in the late 1940s when he emerged as a student leader, helping to found the East Pakistan Chhatra League. He rose to national prominence through his leadership in:
- The Language Movement of 1952, advocating for Bangla as a state language.
- The United Front elections of 1954, which challenged the dominance of Pakistan’s ruling elite.
- The Six-Point Programme of 1966, which became the blueprint for Bangladesh’s economic and political autonomy.
- His role as the main accused in the Agartala Conspiracy Case in 1968, which transformed him into a symbol of Bengali nationalism.
As the leader of the Awami League, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led the party to a historic victory in the 1970 Pakistan general elections. When the central government of Pakistan refused to hand over power, it triggered mass protests, ultimately leading to the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, in which Mujib’s leadership inspired a nation to fight for independence.
Why August 15 Still Matters
The assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was not just a personal tragedy—it was an attack on the political foundation of a newly independent nation. It disrupted the democratic process, allowed military intervention in politics, and silenced a vision for a secular, inclusive, and progressive Bangladesh.
Fifty years later, the wounds remain fresh for many Bangladeshis. The legacy of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman continues to inspire political discourse, and the memory of his final sacrifice is seen by his supporters as a reminder of the cost of freedom and the need to safeguard democratic values.
