Since moving permanently into the first-team changing room at Cobham earlier this month, Alfie Gilchrist’s breakout season at Chelsea has continued.
The 20-year-old, who made his Premier League debut in the 2-1 victory against Crystal Palace in December, joined Chelsea’s development system in 2014 and recently inked a new, long-term contract. He has had a breakout season with Mauricio Pochettino’s team. He has now made six more appearances for the Blues.
However, Gilchrist’s season hit a new high last week when he was permanently transferred to Chelsea’s senior dressing room and his new locker was shown on social media by teammate Noni Madueke.
“My sibling. Congratulations, gg,” Madueke wrote in her Instagram story, sharing the most recent achievement of Gilchrist’s outstanding West London season.
In an interview with Chelseafc.com, Gilchrist remarked, “The moment I came on was amazing,” about his debut. “I made a nice tackle with my first touch and a simple smash with my second. You just need to make sure that your initial actions are constructive, and perhaps things will work themselves out from there.
“I heard the entire audience erupt as soon as I threw in the huge challenge, so I simply got up and ran again to try and retrieve it, make another tackle, or block.
“This year, I had been on the bench a few times, so when the time came for him to call me over, I instantly felt that this was it. To be ready in the unlikely event that you do have the chance to come on, you must constantly be prepared and have the appropriate attitude. I was excited and really wanted to take a chance.”
