Abercrombie & Fitch Ex-CEO Faces Indictment in Sex Trafficking Case

Abercrombie Fitch Ex-CEO Sex Trafficking Indictment

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York has indicted Mike Jeffries, the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch, on 16 federal counts related to sex trafficking and international prostitution.

The charges, brought forth by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, accuse Jeffries of using his position at the globally recognized retailer to facilitate a network involved in exploiting vulnerable men.

Exploiting Power and Influence

According to U.S. Attorney Breon Peace, Jeffries allegedly used his power, wealth, and influence to traffic men for sexual activities, alongside his romantic partner, Matthew Smith. The indictment claims that from 2008 to 2015, Jeffries and Smith, aided by another associate, James Jacobson, orchestrated a scheme to recruit men for “sex events.

Jacobson, aged 71, played a key role in the operation. Jeffries and Smith employed him to recruit and interview men who promised modeling or career opportunities at Abercrombie & Fitch. Jeffries and Smith then enticed these men to participate in these events, providing them with substances like alcohol, muscle relaxants (known as “poppers”), Viagra, and condoms.

A Secretive Global Operation

The indictment reveals that Jeffries and Smith used their extensive financial resources and connections, including security professionals and contractors, to operate an international prostitution ring. These illicit events took the men to destinations like New York City, the Hamptons, and even hotels in Europe and Morocco.

Some of the alleged victims had ties to Abercrombie, having either worked at its stores or modeled for the brand. Prosecutors claim that Jeffries and Smith intentionally targeted heterosexual men, grooming them and preparing them for specific sexual activities. They allegedly drugged these men to perform acts against their will in certain cases.

The Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Following their arrests, Jeffries, Smith, and Jacobson all made appearances in federal court at various locations. The federal court released Jeffries and Jacobson on bonds of $10 million and $500,000, respectively, while Smith remains in detention. All three are scheduled to be arraigned in New York.

Brian Bieber, the attorney representing Jeffries, stated that his client will address the allegations in court once the full details of the indictment are revealed. Matthew Smith’s attorney echoed this sentiment. As of now, there has been no comment from Jacobson’s legal team.

Non-Disclosure Agreements and Coerced Silence

The men recruited for these events were allegedly required to sign non-disclosure agreements, preventing them from discussing their experiences—even with close family or friends. They misled many aspiring models into believing that attending these parties would advance their careers.

The indictment also asserts that in order to maintain secrecy, officials confiscated the men’s personal belongings, including phones and wallets.

Abercrombie & Fitch’s Response and Jeffries’ Controversial Legacy

Abercrombie & Fitch, a once-popular fashion brand known for its provocative marketing under Jeffries’ leadership, has yet to comment on the recent allegations. Jeffries, who stepped down in 2014, had led the company for over two decades, transforming it into a global icon for youth fashion.

Jeffries’ tenure was not without controversy. In a 2006 interview, he made headlines for his exclusionary approach to branding, stating, “We go after the attractive all-American kid… A lot of people don’t belong (in our clothes).” In 2013, after public outcry, the company shifted its policies to include more inclusive sizing.

The Road Ahead

As the case against Jeffries, Smith, and Jacobson unfolds, more details are expected to emerge. The indictment has already shocked many, given Jeffries’ former status as the head of one of the world’s most prominent fashion brands. Prosecutors will likely continue to draw attention to the trial as they strive to bring justice to those allegedly exploited.

The indictment of Mike Jeffries and his associates marks a significant moment in the ongoing fight against sex trafficking. The case highlights how power and wealth can be misused to exploit vulnerable individuals, a grim reminder of the darker side of the fashion industry. The trial is currently underway, providing a platform for the victims to share their stories and shed light on the disturbing allegations that have surfaced.
