Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92

Manmohan Singh Passes Away

Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India and one of the most respected economists and statesmen of the nation, passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. He breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi after being admitted earlier in the day due to a sudden deterioration in his health.

The news of Dr. Singh’s passing has left the nation mourning the loss of a towering figure whose contributions shaped modern India’s economic and political landscape. Tributes from leaders across the globe have poured in, celebrating his life and legacy.

A Political Stalwart Who Shaped India’s Economic Reforms

Dr. Singh retired from the Rajya Sabha in April 2024, concluding an extraordinary political career that spanned over three decades. He first entered the Rajya Sabha in October 1991, a pivotal year in India’s history, when the country faced a severe economic crisis.

It was during this time that Dr. Singh was appointed as the Union Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao’s leadership. In this role, he introduced groundbreaking economic reforms that liberalized the Indian economy. These reforms opened India to global markets, dismantled the License Raj, and set the foundation for the country’s rapid economic growth in subsequent decades.

An Economist of Global Renown

Born on September 26, 1932, in the village of Gah in the Punjab province of undivided India (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh’s early life was marked by brilliance in academics. After the partition of India in 1947, his family relocated to India, where he continued his education.

Dr. Singh earned his undergraduate degree from Panjab University in Chandigarh before pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Cambridge, England. His academic journey culminated in a doctorate in economics from the University of Oxford, where he specialized in international trade and development.

Over the years, Dr. Singh held several prestigious academic and professional positions. In 1972, he was appointed as the Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance, a role that allowed him to influence India’s economic policies at a critical time. He later served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 1982 to 1985, where his leadership strengthened India’s financial stability.

The Man Behind Modern India’s Economic Success

Dr. Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014 is remembered as a period of economic growth, infrastructural development, and social welfare initiatives. Under his leadership, India witnessed significant advancements in information technology, foreign investments, and poverty alleviation programs.

His commitment to inclusive growth was evident in policies such as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and the Right to Information Act (RTI), which empowered citizens and enhanced transparency. Despite facing challenges, his calm demeanor and integrity earned him widespread admiration.

Leaders from India and around the world have expressed their condolences, highlighting Dr. Singh’s contributions to global economics and governance. President of India Droupadi Murmu called him “a visionary leader whose efforts transformed the Indian economy.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Dr. Singh as “a statesman who dedicated his life to the service of the nation.”

Former U.S. President Barack Obama, who had shared a strong rapport with Dr. Singh during his tenure, called him “a man of grace and wisdom who played a pivotal role in strengthening India-U.S. relations.”

Personal Life and Legacy

Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters. Known for his humility and dedication, he led a life of simplicity that inspired millions. His contributions as an economist, policymaker, and leader have left an indelible mark on India’s history.

In addition to his political and economic achievements, Dr. Singh was a prolific writer, authoring numerous papers and books on economics and public policy. His intellectual legacy continues to inspire students, economists, and policymakers worldwide.

A Nation Mourns

As the nation comes to terms with the loss of one of its most revered leaders, Dr. Singh’s life stands as a testament to the power of vision, integrity, and perseverance. His funeral is expected to witness attendance from dignitaries and citizens alike, who will gather to pay their respects to a leader who dedicated his life to building a stronger, more inclusive India.
