 Vespasian Proclaimed Emperor (69 CE)

The year 69 CE was a tough time for Rome. It’s known as the “Year of the Four Emperors” because four different men ruled as emperor in just one year. On July 1, 69 CE, Roman General Vespasian was named emperor by his troops in Egypt.

Before this, Vespasian was fighting a war in Judea. But when he heard about the chaos in Rome, he decided to try for the throne. His soldiers in Egypt supported him, and this was the start of his rise to power.

Vespasian became a good emperor. He brought peace after a year of fighting. He started building the famous Colosseum in Rome. He also made the government better and saved money. Vespasian’s rule began a time of peace and growth for Rome that lasted almost 30 years.

 Assault on Jerusalem (70 CE)

Just one year after Vespasian became emperor, his son Titus led an attack on Jerusalem. This was part of the First Jewish-Roman War, which had started in 66 CE when the Jews rebelled against Roman rule.
Assault on Jerusalem

On July 1, 70 CE, Titus and his army set up big machines called battering rams. These were used to break down the walls of Jerusalem. The siege was long and hard. The people inside the city suffered from hunger and disease.

When Jerusalem fell, it was a big change for Jewish history. The Second Temple, which was very important to the Jewish faith, was destroyed. Many Jews were killed or sold as slaves. This event is still remembered and mourned in Jewish tradition today.

 Thomas More’s Trial (1535)

On July 1, 1535, a famous trial began in England. The person on trial was Thomas More, who had once been a close friend and advisor to King Henry VIII.

More was in trouble because he wouldn’t agree that Henry was the head of the Church in England. Henry wanted this title because the Pope wouldn’t let him divorce his wife. More, a strong Catholic, believed only the Pope could lead the Church.

The trial was short and unfair. More was found guilty of treason and later executed. His death showed how much power Henry VIII had and how England was changing from a Catholic country to a Protestant one.

 Battle of Boyne (1690)

On July 1, 1690, a very important battle took place in Ireland. It was between two kings fighting for the British throne: Protestant King William III and Catholic King James II.

This battle was part of a bigger war in Ireland. William had taken the throne from James, who then went to Ireland to try to win it back. The two armies met at the River Boyne in Ireland.

William’s army won the battle. This victory helped secure Protestant rule in England and Ireland for many years. The Battle of the Boyne is still remembered today, especially in Northern Ireland, where some people celebrate it each year.
