Long-Term Consumption of Artificial Sugar Can Cause Serious Damage Including Cancer

There are various uses of sugar in our daily food. However, many people have to avoid sugar for various reasons, including health risks, weight loss, and diabetes. But there are several sweet foods that cannot be imagined without sugar. So many choose artificial sugar as an alternative. Because it also adds sweetness to the food and is also low in calories. There are currently six FDA-approved artificial sugars available on the market.

1. Saccharin

2. Aspartame

3. Sucralose

4. Acesulfame potassium

5. Neotum

6. Advantum

Artificial Sugar Can Cause Serious Damage to Your Health

Different information is available from time to time about this artificial sugar. Even among scientists, there are two opinions on this. Many believe that aspartame contains cancer-causing chemicals. However, a World Health Organization report published on July 14, 2023, says that aspartame can definitely cause cancer—there is not enough evidence to support it. Further research is needed to understand this better.

However, although there is a multifaceted debate about the risk of cancer in artificial sugar, it cannot be said that it does not have any harmful effects on health. According to preliminary data, artificial sugar can cause serious damage, including cancer.

1. Appetite and weight gain

Many people think that artificial sugar is a very useful option for weight loss. But this idea is not correct at all. Instead, artificial sugar can trigger hunger cravings in your brain. Many studies have shown that aspartame can increase calorie intake, hunger, and sugar cravings compared to real sugar. So, it does not play any role in weight loss at all. Apart from this, the artificial sugar in diet soda drinks also helps in weight gain.

2. Increased blood insulin levels

blood insulin levels

Although artificial sugar does not raise blood sugar levels, it can increase blood insulin levels. The pancreas perceives it as sugar because of its sweet taste. As a result, the production of insulin increases. Which lowers blood sugar levels. That is, artificial sugar destroys the balance of blood sugar and insulin.

3. Changes in Beneficial Gut Bacteria

The bacteria in the gut respond slightly differently to artificial sugar than to real sugar. Saccharin and sucrose have been shown to alter the gut microbiome. This results in an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut. This can lead to problems like bloating, thinning of the lining around the intestines, migraines, autoimmune diseases, mood swings, irritability, and anxiety.

4. Increases the risk of stroke and heart disease

According to a recent study by the American Heart Association, artificially sweetened beverages may increase the risk of stroke and heart disease in older and middle-aged people. But this also requires more detailed research.

5. Increases the risk of metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome basically refers to several risk factors at the same time. That is the cause of major health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Such as fat around the waist, high triglyceride levels, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc.
