Massive Underground Ocean Found 700km Below Earth’s Surface: Details Inside

Hidden Ocean Discovered Beneath Earth

Consider the enormous size of the oceans on Earth. Imagine now an undersea world three times that big, hidden away deep beneath the surface of the planet at a depth of 700 kilometers, rather than across it.

This is not a science fiction story; rather, it is the astonishing finding of a group of scientists that helps to solve the riddles surrounding the origins of water on our planet.

Unveiling Earth’s Hidden Hydrosphere

Scientists have made a groundbreaking discovery in their search for the source of Earth’s water. They have found an enormous ocean hidden deep within the Earth’s mantle, more than 700 kilometers beneath the surface.

This mysterious ocean, hidden within a mesmerizing blue rock called ringwoodite, presents a captivating enigma that pushes the boundaries of our knowledge regarding the origins of Earth’s water. This subterranean sea is incredibly massive, surpassing the volume of all the planet’s surface oceans combined by threefold.

This discovery is truly captivating due to its immense scale and also presents a fresh theory regarding Earth’s water cycle. It indicates that rather than being brought by comet impacts, as some theories suggest, Earth’s oceans may have gradually leaked out from its core.

The Science Behind The Discovery

According to Steven Jacobsen, a researcher at Northwestern University in Illinois and the lead author of the study, there is solid evidence suggesting that water on Earth originated from within. According to Jacobsen, this hidden reservoir could also provide an explanation for the consistent size of the world’s oceans over millions of years.

Researchers utilized a network of 2000 seismographs spread across the United States to uncover the hidden ocean beneath the surface. By studying seismic waves produced by more than 500 earthquakes, they were able to gain valuable insights. Scientists can deduce the presence of a significant water deposit by observing how waves slow down as they pass through Earth’s inner layers, including its core, which are composed of wet rock.

Earth’s Water Cycle Reimagined

Water has been discovered within the Earth’s mantle, seeping between grains of rock. This finding has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the planet‘s water cycle. Jacobsen highlights the importance of this reservoir, as it prevents the water from being on the Earth’s surface and ensures that land, other than mountaintops, remains visible.

Now, researchers are excited about collecting additional seismic data from various locations worldwide to investigate the frequency of this mantle melting phenomenon. Their discoveries have the potential to completely transform our comprehension of the water cycle on Earth, providing fresh perspectives on one of the most essential processes of our planet.
