ChatGPT: What It Can and Can’t Do

ChatGPT

It’s only been a couple of years, but we’ve already reached a point where it’s hard to remember what the world looked like before the creation of ChatGPT. It’s become an everyday tool for countless users across the world already, and it’s used for a variety of purposes, some of which we’ll explore below. If you haven’t jumped aboard the AI bandwagon yet, you’re missing out – an estimated two hundred million people use ChatGPT every week, and in doing so, they’re probably gaining an advantage over you in terms of productivity and creativity.

If you haven’t yet dipped your toes in the AI water, this article is going to be useful to you. Before you say your first “hello” to the world’s most popular generative AI tool, you need to know what it can and can’t help you with. Like any machine or tool, there are some things that it excels at and other things that it either can’t or won’t do. We’re going to look into the biggest “cans” and “cannots” of ChatGPT here.

What ChatGPT Can Do

1. Answer Questions Across a Wide Range of Topics

One of the most impressive features of ChatGPT is its ability to provide information on a vast array of subjects. Whether you’re trying to find out about historical events, scientific concepts, or works of literature, ChatGPT can offer detailed explanations that cater to your level of understanding.

Example: If you ask, “What caused the fall of the Roman Empire?” ChatGPT can provide a comprehensive overview of the political, economic, and social factors that contributed to this history-altering event.

2. Assist with Writing and Creativity

Plenty of people who spend their days generating content know what it feels like to get chronic writer’s block. ChatGPT can help generate ideas, craft outlines, and even compose paragraphs to get you started. It’s like having a brainstorming partner available at any time. Yes, some people think it’s killing human creativity, but we’re inclined to disagree. It’s a helping hand, not an outright alternative to doing your own thinking.

Example: Need a catchy introduction for your essay on environmental conservation? ChatGPT can suggest engaging opening lines that set the tone for your piece.

3. Provide Language Translation and Practice

For those learning a new language or needing quick translations, ChatGPT can translate text between multiple languages. It can also help you practise by holding conversations with you or explaining complex grammar rules.

Example: If you’re learning French and want to understand the differences between  “le” and “la,”  ChatGPT can explain this with relevant examples.

4. Explain Complex Concepts in Simple Terms

Complex information can literally be a headache to absorb, but ChatGPT excels at breaking difficult data down into more digestible pieces. It can simplify intricate ideas without losing the essence of the subject matter.

Example: If you want to get a layman’s guide to quantum mechanics, you can ask ChatGPT to explain it in basic terms, and it will provide an explanation tailored to your level of understanding.

5. Offer Coding Assistance

For programmers, ChatGPT can be a fantastic resource for understanding code snippets, debugging errors, or learning new programming languages.

Example: If you’re stuck on a Python function that’s not returning the expected result, ChatGPT can help identify potential issues in your code.

What ChatGPT Can’t Do

1. Provide Real-Time Data or Updates

While ChatGPT knows pretty much everything there is to know up to its last update in September 2021, it doesn’t have access to real-time data or events occurring after that date. It can’t provide current news updates, stock prices, or weather forecasts.

Example: If you ask about the latest developments in a political situation that unfolded after September 2021 – let’s say the US Election, for example – ChatGPT won’t be able to provide that information.

2. Engage with Adult Material

ChatGPT is programmed to adhere to strict guidelines that prohibit certain types of content. One of the biggest restrictions is that it can’t assist people with casinos or gambling. This means it won’t provide strategies for betting, odds calculations, or any advice related to online or offline gambling activities.

Example: If you ask, “What’s the best strategy to win at blackjack?” ChatGPT will politely decline to provide that information, citing its terms and conditions. You’ll still need to go to places like Sister casino sites if you’re after information that might give you an edge in the online casino world – ChatGPT doesn’t really know what a casino sister site is, much less how to compare one to another.

3. Offer Professional Medical, Legal, or Financial Advice

While ChatGPT can provide general information, it’s not – and we really can’t stress this enough – a substitute for professional advice. It can’t offer medical diagnoses, legal counsel, or financial planning services.

Example: If you ask, “Should I invest in cryptocurrency?” ChatGPT will tell you to consult a qualified financial advisor for such decisions.

4. Perform Tasks Outside of Text-Based Interactions

ChatGPT operates purely through text. It can’t perform physical actions, access personal data, or interact with other systems on your behalf – or, at least, it can’t do these things yet.

Example: If you tell it to “Delete all the files on my computer,” ChatGPT can’t execute that command. To be honest, we hope it stays that way forever.

5. Guarantee Absolute Accuracy

While ChatGPT strives to provide correct information, it’s not a perfect system. There may be instances where it provides outdated or incorrect answers. Users should verify critical information through reliable sources.

Example: If you’re using ChatGPT to fact-check a crucial piece of data for a research paper, it’s wise to cross-reference with authoritative references. ChatGPT has a habit of “daydreaming” when it comes to specific information and will sometimes make things up to fill in the gaps in its knowledge.

6. Express Personal Opinions or Emotions

As an AI language model developed to process and generate text, ChatGPT doesn’t possess consciousness or emotions. It doesn’t hold personal opinions or feelings about topics, much as it might be able to pretend to.

Example: If you ask, “Do you think art is more important than science?” ChatGPT can discuss perspectives on the topic but is incapable of having an emotive opinion on the topic.

Making the Most of ChatGPT Within Its Guidelines

Understanding the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT ensures a smoother and more productive interaction. By knowing what it can assist with, users can leverage its strengths effectively. Simultaneously, being aware of what it can’t do helps set appropriate expectations and encourages users to seek assistance from professionals when necessary.

Conclusion

ChatGPT is an impressive testament to advancements in artificial intelligence, offering users a powerful tool for learning and assistance. By understanding what it can and can’t do, you can engage with ChatGPT more effectively and responsibly. Whether you’re looking to expand your knowledge, get help with writing, or explore new ideas, ChatGPT is ready to assist—but only within the boundaries of its programming and ethical guidelines.
