No matter how you choose to play Baccarat, you’re sure to meet fellow players along the way that share your love for the game. And whilst you’re trading skillsets and strategies, why not pull a few unexpected facts out of the bag and wow your newfound friends?
Read on to find out more.
Baccarat from the comfort of your own home
Much like all of our favourite casino games, Baccarat has proudly made the leap online, allowing fans to get their gaming fix from the comfort of their own homes. Gone are the days where prospective players would have to make their way down to their nearest location – now, all you need is an internet connection and appropriate device, and the game is right at your fingertips.
What’s more, thanks to further advancements in technology, you can also play live casino games from your home. This means that you get to virtually experience every part of the casino, including interacting with the dealer and getting a close-up look at the cards as they’re dealt.
Slot machines are known to have the ultimate house edge, equalling an average of around 3%-8% and having the fastest pace of any game. However, close behind the one-armed bandit, you’ll find Baccarat. The house edge will usually equal a minimum of 1.5% — depending where you play. This means that, whilst it’s not impossible for the game to fall in the player’s favour, the casino will often be at an advantage.
Since the game originated in France, it should come as no surprise that the correct pronunciation of Baccarat isn’t exactly phonetical. Although it’s incredibly common to hear people referring to this iconic game as Back-Uh-Rat, this isn’t how the French intended. In fact, it’s meant to be a softer sounding word, without a hard T, like this: Bah-Kuh-Rah.
If you still need a helping hand correctly pronouncing the game’s name, listen here.
Origin of the Name
The name Baccarat is believed to have come from the Etruscan genesis story, where after Falguiere developed the card game, he chose the old Italian word for “zero” which is “baccara”. Allegedly, the reasoning behind this naming decision was that zero value cards were the most prominent in the deck, as tens, jacks, queens and kings all counted as a zero when they appear in a player’s hand.
The game is also sometimes known as Chemin De Fer, due to its French origins, particularly in the Bond franchise, which we will touch on next.
Baccarat and Bond
When you think of the smooth-talking James Bond, it’s no surprise that images of the iconic spy facing off against his enemies, in a crowded casino, are what comes to mind. Across 57 years and 26 feature films, we’ve seen Bond battle it out across almost all of the gaming tables that the casino has to offer. In Dr. No (1962) we see Bond hit the silver screen at the Baccarat table. Dressed in a signature shiny tuxedo, with a fancy cigarette balancing between his fingers, Bond remains on top throughout his iconic game of Baccarat. 007 makes it look deceptively easy – pulling natural 8s and 9s with ease, a feat that would never be as easy for a regular player in a real-life casino. But, that’s just movie magic for you!
